Raleigh, N.C. — Wake Tech men's soccer defeated Richard Bland 1-0 at WRAL Soccer Park to advance to the Region 10 championship game for the first time since 2010. That season, the Eagles won 13 games and fell narrowly to Spartanburg Methodist in the championship. On Saturday, October 25 the team will travel to Louisburg and take on the #1-seed Hurricanes.
Wednesday's semifinal was a tight affair that was scoreless at the break, and well into the second half it looked like neither team would find the back of the net. Then, in the 83rd minute, freshman forward Kenneth Suarez looked to play a pass into the 18-yard box to set up a scoring chance, but his lofted ball soared over the Richard Bland goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Wake Tech goalkeeper Jacob Whitfield, who recently received first team All-Region honors, made five saves in his second shutout of the season.
The Eagles outshot the Statesmen 14 to 12, with 11 of the 14 coming in the second half.
A win on Saturday would send the team to it's first every NJCAA District Championship, which takes place next weekend in Millbrook, AL.
