Eagles set for Region 10 Tournament
RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake Tech men's basketball's regular season concluded last week and are now set to begin postseason play on Thursday evening.
The Eagles are 14-14 on the season, and picking up at least two wins at the tournament would clinch their third straight winning season.
To find success at the tournament, the team will lean on sophomore guard Andrew Navarro, who is second on the team in scoring (14.9 per game), and first in three-pointers made (2.3 per game). He has the ability to take over a game offensively, with four performances of at least 20 points, and a career-high 36 in a double overtime win at Richard Bland on December 3. Navarro has scored in double figures in three of the team's last four contests.
Sophomore forward Tequan Holley is also a standout for this year's team. The Trap, N.C. native is averaging 11.7 points per game and leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game.
The Eagles are set to head to South Prince George, Va. tonight to compete in the Region 10 Division I Men's Basketball Championship as the No. 6 seed. They'll take on No. 3 seed USC Salkehatchie on Thursday at 6:00. Richard Bland College is hosting the tournament, with all games played at Statesman Hall.
The Indians have gotten the better of the Eagles in their first two matchups this season, but the game at home was decided by just five points, with Salkehatchie winning 92-87. Holley was 7-for-10 from the field that game and finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Charles Matheka scored 10 and tallied four assists in the loss, and freshman forward BJ Solomon added 12 points, eight boards, and three assists. It will reqiure a team effort to advance to the tournament's semifinal round, which will be played Friday against the winner of the game between No. 2 seed Brunswick and No. 7 seed Cape Fear.
The tournament also serves as the NJCAA South District Championship, with the winner getting an automatic bid to the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship in Hutchinson, Kan. later this month.
Wake Tech already has one win this season at Statesman Hall, beating Richard Bland in double overtime on December 3.
