Eagles baseball one win away from first ever Region 10 Title
KINSTON, N.C. — Wake Tech baseball advanced to a winner-take-all game at the NJCAA Division II Region 10 Tournament on Monday afternoon, defeating #2-ranked Brunswick 5-2. The two teams will meet again on Tuesday morning at 10:00 am, with the winner being crowned Region 10 Champions and punching their ticket to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Okla..
Josh Murphy got the start for the Eagles, and pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowing just one run.
The Eagles got on the board first, plating three runs in the top of the second inning. A single from Jake Mathis brought home Jackson Jones, followed by Colton Mayes stealing home to make it 2-0. Jentz Steiner singled home Mathis to make it 3-0.
Brunswick got a run back in the bottom of the third, and another in the fifth to make it a one-run game.
Wake Tech added a run in the top of the sixth, with Steiner bringing home another run on an RBI groundout.
In the seventh, Blake Gaffney came around to score on an error, making it 5-2 Eagles.
Murphy worked into the fourth, and was relieved by Aidan Warnock. Warnock worked four innings, allowing just one run. Then he made way for Grayson McDonald, who recorded the final five outs, including three strikeouts, and picked up his first save of the season.
Four wins at the tournament marks a new high for the program, and a win on Tuesday would be the program's first ever Region 10 title. Tickets for Tuesday's game can be purchased at the gate at Grainger Stadium for $15.
