HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Wake Tech baseball picked up a pair of wins on Saturday against Guilford Tech, clinching the series against the Titans.
Game one: Wake Tech 8, Guilford Tech 4
Grayson McDonald got the start and worked six innings, giving up three runs and striking out nine. His nine strikeouts tied a career-high that was set on April 12, 2025 against Southwest Virginia.
The Eagles trailed 3-0 through four innings, but got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Blake Russell doubled home Brendan Fulcher. They took the lead in the sixth with a three-run inning. John Mason singled home Davis Reed, then a Jackson Jones double scored Mason and Jentz Steiner to make it 4-3.
A Cameron Crews sacrifice fly scored Blake Gaffney in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-3 for the Eagles.
Three more runs came across in the eighth to give Wake Tech an 8-4 lead. Another double from Russell scored Mason, and a Nick Schultz triple brought home Russell. Schultz then came across to score on a wild pitch.
Schultz finished the game 3-5, his most hits in a game this season and just the third three-hit game of his career.
Coltin Hedrick pitched two innings in relief, keeping the Titans off the board and striking out three. Aidan Warnock got the ninth inning, allowing just one hit but striking out the side to finish the game.
Game two: Wake Tech 7, Guilford Tech 1
Ayden Sumner got the ball for game two and continued his incredible start to the 2026 season. The sophomore right-hander went six innings, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out four. With 30 innings pitched on the season, Sumner leads all Region 10 Division II pitchers with a 1.50 ERA.
The Eagles wasted no time to open the scoring in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in the first. Russell hit his third double of the day to score Jones. Russell would then score on a double play.
Guilford Tech's only run of the game came on an RBI double in the fourth inning.
The Eagles blew it open in the fifth inning, scoring five. Mason scored on an error from the Titans' second basemen, then Gaffney doubled home Russell. Schultz picked up another RBI on a single to center scoring Gaffney, and then Matthew Phuntek got in on the action with an RBI double to center, scoring Schultz.
Chance Turner pitched a clean seventh to secure Wake Tech's third-straight win and clinch their second straight Region 10 series victory.
